Autumn Leaves

Autumn Leaves Berlin

Third Impressions of Deutschland

As much as I've been enjoying taking photos of my new home with an iPhone, I probably won't be posting any more of those photos here unless I choose to jabber a bit about the iPhone camera as a device, as itself.

These photos were taken while wandering back and forth across Berlin, with a lot of time looking at art, architecture, and the sky. All of which are here, and all of which I like about here.

Wedding: Babs & Miles

What with all the craziness of moving countries I didn't post anything about this fantastic wedding I had the pleasure to photograph in Bali, Indonesia, right before I left for Germany.

Babs and Miles are not your average couple. They hired out the beautiful Mahatma House in Seseh, and threw the most colourful, fun ceremony you can imagine. After the beautifully non-traditional ceremony and some extremely entertaining speeches, the wedding party released lanterns on the beach, and then partied, fully-clothed, in the pool.

Norwegian Journal of Nutrition

Some of my photos from my work with UNICEF in the Mekong Delta at the end of last year have been published in the Norwegian Journal of Nutrition. The article is a letter from Vietnam by UNICEF's own Roger Mathisen who was down in the delta with me, or rather, I was down there with him. Thank-you to Roger for sharing my photos of the important work UNICEF are doing in Vietnam.

Cologne

I was only in Cologne for a day, and it rained for most of that. But here are some shots from the wee wedges of time between the showers.

Potsdam

So far I've been living on an island called Berlin. It's a cool island, so that's alright. But it's good to see what's outside the island, and these photos are from a trip to Potsdam. Most of the photos are from Sansoucci Park, which is a World Heritage Site, and very nice to cycle around, especially in the low, late summer's light.

Vietnam: Cam On/Hen Gap Lai

Well then. Previously I thought I'd write this in the airport while waiting for the flight that was going to take me away from Vietnam. That, I thought, would be the right thing, the poetic thing to do. But, as it happened, it took a very long time to check in given the amount of luggage we had. So before boarding there was only time enough to sit down briefly, eat a bowl of overpriced pho, let the blood flow back into our faces, dry the tears flowing out of our pockets, and get on the plane. And, after that, there was champagne to be quaffed as we taxied to the runway (courtesy of a very nice man who, seeing our pale, distressed faces as it dawned on us how much our excess baggage was going to cost us, bumped us up to business class). Then there was a short-term apartment to move into and out of, and another apartment to be moved into, and bureaucratic things to sort out, and new things to discover, and suddenly a couple of months had passed.

Wire Magazine

Wedding: Stephanie + Liam

Stephanie and Liam got married in a very intimate ceremony on board a private boat in Halong Bay. When we set off from the harbour it was overcast and drizzling, and the forecast was for the weather to stay that way. The ceremony was scheduled to take place in the tiny dining room if it didn't clear up but, fortunately, the sun came out and hoovered up all the clouds just in time for the couple and their friends to celebrate on the sundeck.

Many thanks to Stephanie and Liam for having me there to document their special day (and for letting me lightpaint them), and all the best for the future. Thanks also to Bhaya Cruises for the smooth sailing, and to the lovely folk at WedinStyle for taking me along, and for jetting me out of the bay in a speedboat.

Portfolio: East & West Traveller

A little while back I had a few travel images from around Asia published in East & West Traveller Magazine. Many thanks to David Buglar for supporting my work.

Spring Cleaning In The Autumn

I've been neglecting this blog of late for things actual and virtual. I have no evidence of the actual as yet, so I can only present the virtual, and only some of it, or the face of it at least.

Many hours have I spent hunched over the computer fiddling with both the front and back ends of my website. I'm learning anew about SEO and other such things that make my head spin. I'm trying to push my pages up the search engines so that I have some form of visibility online. For some reason I'm still at the top of page one for photographers in Hanoi while I ride a yo yo between pages 27 and nowhere for photographers in Berlin. It's extremely frustrating, but things are looking up - my long awaited business registration arrived from Google today so hopefully that marks a time to climb.

I've also overhauled my website - changed the colour scheme, combined some galleries, updated, re-sized and trimmed down the amount of images, and made the whole thing nice and easy to view on iPhones and iPads or any form of touchscreen device. It's not finished, but it's a start, and it feels good to get underway in that sense.

The Wire - Over the Wires:

One of my images is up on The Wire website. Plus you can stream a few tracks from some of the experimental musicians working in Hanoi today. Journey through this word here if you will. More to come soon on this shoot.
