Old Iraqi Embassy | Berlin

The old Iraqi Embassy was abandoned at the beginning of 1991. That is all. You can read more about it on this fine blog. And here, below, are some of the sights your eyes might see if you put them there.

Location Scouting | Berlin

If there's anything my long, illustrious photography career has taught me, it's to be prepared if you have the chance. Although one of the many joys of the job is to parachute (or be parachuted) into a situation blind, with only your wits and eyes to save you, there's nowt wrong with saving yourself the sweat beads if you can.

A case in point: portrait sessions. It's always worth scouting locations to get an idea of backgrounds, foregrounds, aspect, texture, pattern, shape, direction, form, place and the like, to get inspiration for the shots you want to take. Then you feel calmer. You can sleep on your ideas and allow them to marinate. And you can begin to worry in a professional manner about the weather being different to when you scouted.

In any case, while out scouting, there are photos to take, too. And if that sounds obvious, it's because these are photos:

Pride | Toronto | Canada

More from my trip to Canadia last year - Pride, in Toronto. A fun day, containing the kind of fun that would probably upset Toronto's mayor, Rob Ford, very much.

Niagara | Canada

I'm finally getting around to wading through my photos from Canada and the US, taken over a year ago. Slow I am.
Here are some from a day out to Niagara Falls and its environs. It, itself was a big, wet, awe-inspiring thing.

Wrocław | Poland

Wrocław rocks. This is definitely not the first time someone has said that, therefore not the first time someone has got it wrong. Not that Wrocław doesn't rock. It does, very much. But it's not pronounced 'rock-law', rather 'vros-woff', or something close to that.

Whatever the perfect pronunciation is, tis a swell place, and I'll be back there soon. Especially to you, Armine, to eat of your homely fare under the train tracks. Please set the table for me, I won't be long.

Leipzig | Germany

I went to Leipzig in the winter, when all was black and white. The city was way more derelict than I had expected, but in between the broken houses is a fun place in possession of hidden corners, smoky bars, monumental monuments, art, and a restaurant serving the best hummus I've ever had the good fortune to place on my tongue. I hope to go back one summer and shoot it in colour.

Quelle | Germany

One from a wee local station in Deutschland's west. The sun was setting o'er the tracks on which a train retreated. You don't need me to tell you that, though. Look.

Berlin | Olympus Photo Playground

Some pictures I took at the Olympus Photo Playground in Mitte while location-scouting for an upcoming portrait shoot. Entry is free, and those without cameras can rent. It's nice there.

Belgium | Brussels

On my way back from shooting a wedding in the east of Belgium earlier this year, I spent a morning in Brussels. It treated me handsomely, told me to come back soon and, next time, to order the mussels instead.

Ballhaus Riviera, Grunau

These shots are from a touch of location scouting for an engagement shoot, in the south-east of the city at the Ballhaus Riviera. It was built during the time of the Weimar Republic, and was in use up until around 1990. Since then, it's been left to rot and is falling, bit by bit, to bits.
